Frederick E. “Freddy” Hargreave, MB ChB, MD

It is an honor and a privilege to prepare an article on Freddy Hargreave for the Giants in Allergy-Immunology series. I was exceedingly fortunate to be Freddy's first research fellow. My arrival in Hamilton in 1975 was a result of several random and serendipitous happenings, including an unwanted respiratory rotation (1972) that changed my career direction, an unnecessary 1-year delay (1973–1974) in clinical respiratory training that I spent in allergy training with Bram Rose, and a default choice of Hamilton, Ontario, over Winnipeg, Manitoba, because I did not want to spend even 1 year on the Canadian prairies (where I have now lived for almost 40 years!) The curriculum vitae evidence of my allergy training resulted in my research fellowship application landing on Freddy's desk.
