PurposeThe aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of ethanolamine oleate (EO) sclerotherapy in the treatment of peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG).Patients and methods24 patients presenting with PGCG more than 2cm in diameter were included in this study. Definitive diagnosis was confirmed after a histopathological examination of an incisional biopsy. 2.5% EO sclerotherapy was injected once a week into each lesion. Repeated injections were done if needed. The treatment response was recorded as complete remission (CR), moderate response (MR), or no change (NC).ResultsThis study involved 11 men, and 13 women, ranging in age from 9 to 70 years. The average age was 45.3 years. The mandible was involved (75%) more than maxilla. PGCG occurred posteriorly (62.5%), more than anteriorly. The number of injection sessions was 57, with an average of 2.4 sessions per lesion. Clinical improvement was seen in 23 patients; complete remission in 20 patients (83.3%), and moderate improvement in 3 patients (12.5%). One patient showed no clinical improvement (4.2%).ConclusionEO injection offers an alternative to conventional methods for the treatment of PGCG. The technique is straightforward, safe, and cost effective with high success rate.
