Over 102,000 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) were reported in 2011 with rates growing annually.1 The main NMSC is basal cell carcinoma accounting for 75%, with others including squamous cell carcinoma. It has been estimated that 90% of NMSC originates from exposure to UV light; which initiates malignant transformation in keratinocytes and reduces the protective inflammatory and immune.2 The increasing incidence has been attributed to an ageing population, rises in recreational activity associated with skin exposure, and use of sunbeds.
