In 1906, Von Pirquet1 used the term supersensitivity without immunity to describe (1) symptoms of inhalant allergy, (2) positive immediate skin test results, and (3) the fact that the results of other tests of immunity were not positive in these patients. The other tests he referred to were precipitin tests and complement fixation. Thus, he opened up the question of serum tests for supersensitivity. In 1919, Ramirez2 reported that a patient who had received a blood transfusion from a horse allergic donor became allergic to horse dander.
