John Herbert Sowray 1927–2015

John Sowray was an intensely private man who did not like to speak about himself. As such he would not have approved of an obituary spilling the beans about his life. Little is known of his early school life, but in August 1944 he volunteered for the Royal Airforce Voluntary Reserve and entered via Cambridge University Air Squadron studying aeronautics at Jesus College. He trained as a pilot and was recommended for a Short Service Commission which he declined as he did not wish to remain in the RAF in peace-time! He was awarded the Defence and War Medals.
