Our cover features a periodic acid schiff staining of kidney sections from Candida albicans-infected Ja18−/− mice. Accumulation of inflammatory cells were observed around the colonies of C. albicans. The image is taken from Haraguchi et al. (pp. 1691–1703), where the authors show that Ja18−/− mice are highly resistant to candidiasis. iNKT cells may increase the initial severity of C. albicans infection by modulating innate immune responses, especially by suppressing macrophage antifungal activity. Thus, iNKT cells are an important host factor in the regulation of susceptibility to infection with C. albicans.
