A stereotyped sequence from EEG arousals to nocturnal groaning events with or without the intervening sleep bruxism in catathrenia

A 39-year-old man was referred to our center for a 3-year history of snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. His wife reported his nocturnal groaning (NG) and sleep talking. The video-polysomnography (video-PSG) revealed that he had not only groaning but also rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) and an apnea/ hypopnea index (AHI) of 6.9/h with an arousal index of 12.0/h. Sleep efficiency was 88.2%, and the proportions of the various sleep stages as a percentage of total sleep time were as follows: stage N1 8.1%; stage N2 66.2%; stage N3 0.7%; and REM sleep 25.0%.
