A case of acquired angioedema possibly associated with adenocarcinoma of the colon

Acquired angioedema (AAE) is an uncommon condition characterized by angioedema without wheals associated with low C1 inhibitor, C4, and C1q levels secondary to disproportionate activation or depletion of C1 esterase inhibitor (C1INH). First described by Caldwell et al1 in 1972, AAE is clinically indistinguishable from hereditary angioedema (HAE) and leads to unpredictable angioedema episodes that last 2 to 5 days. AAE is most commonly due to lymphoproliferative disorders.2 Less common causes include solid organ tumors, infection, and systemic lupus erythematosus.
