Clinical Signs, Neuroanatomical Distribution and Histopathological Characterization of Meningoencephalitis in Wild Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) Associated with a Novel Fox Circovirus.

Abstract
A novel fox circovirus has been implicated in the causation of meningoencephalitis in wild red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Six wild red foxes infected with the novel fox circovirus displayed clinical signs including reduced responsiveness, facial twitching, dysphagia, repetitive head movements, circling, visual impairment and ease of handling, with no improvement prior to humane destruction. Gross post-mortem examination was unremarkable in all cases. Histopathological examination of the brain identified marked, multifocal, non-suppurative (lymphocytic) polioencephalitis and meningitis, with multifocal marked neuronal necrosis. This paper reports the clinical signs, neuroanatomical distribution and histopathological characterization of lesions in these animals.
