Abnormal thyroid hormones and non-thyroidal illness syndrome in obstructive sleep apnea, and effects of CPAP treatment

• Non-thyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS) occurred in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)• NTIS in OSA was associated with severe nocturnal hypoxemia• Low T3 could reduce nocturnal energy expenditure in the most hypoxemic OSA subjects• Free T3 was normalised after CPAP treatment in OSA patients with NTIS• TSH slightly increased after CPAP treatment in subclinically hypothyroid OSA subjects
