Skull base osteomyelitis.SBO commonly occurs as a complication of MOE and chronic mastoid infections or secondary to sphenoidal sinusitis.
The diagnostic criteria set forth by Cohen and Friedman include pain, exudates, edema, and granulation tissue of EAC and positive technetium 99 m (Tc99 m) scan.
Patients with MOE usually complain of otalgia that is out of proportion and is also worse at night. Other symptoms include conductive deafness, headache, and temporomandibular joint pain. The cardinal signs on examination include woody induration of pinna, preauricular cellulitis, and tender EAC with granulation tissue.
